President Chakwera appeals for global equitable healthcare

President Lazarus Chakwera has appealed for equitable healthcare services across the globe, saying it is the only way the global economy can be safeguarded from the health related disruptions experienced in the past two years.

Addressing the World Economic Forum session on investing in Health Equity in Davos- Switzerland, on Tuesday, May 24,2022, President Chakwera told the meeting that World is currently aware that the public health is the bedrock of economies, and that economies of all nations are inextricably linked.

“We now know that public health is the bedrock of economies. We are all now painfully aware that if the health of any nation’s citizens can not be guaranteed, it threatens the very foundations of the economy.

We are also painfully aware that economies of a nations are so inextricably linked that a Corona virus outbreak in the Eastern World or a Monkey Pox outbreak in the Western World can have devastating effects on economies in the global South.” Read part of the speech by Malawi leader during the session.

Chakwera further told the session that this is the reason that investments in filling the health systems gaps and inequalities exposed by the pandemic in the developing nations like Malawi remains an investment in the stability of the global economy which must be done by all stakeholders.

Malawi leader added that as the champion of the 7th replenishment of the Global Fund, Malawi has benefited through health facilities capacity in saving millions of lives from diseases such as Malaria, Tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.

“My appeal to all of you is to make sure that initiatives like this that are aimed at investing in health systems do not lose their place on your list of priorities.” Said President Chakwera.

President Chakwera has since appealed with all countries not to compromise investments in public health regardless of the security emergencies that they need to deal with.

The Malawi leader is currently in Davos, Switzerland where he is among leaders attending the World Economic Forum which started on May 21, and is expected to end on May 25,2022.
