The Malawi Police Service has confirmed the arrest of a fellow police officer, Sub Inspector David Chitsike, in connection with the alleged accidental shooting of a 36-year-old fitness trainer, Chikondi Makawa, in Lilongwe.

National Police Public Relations Officer, Peter Kalaya, told Malawi Daily Telegraph that once the investigations are completed the nation will be updated.

“We are aware of the incident and at the moment we have placed the officer involved in the fracas in our custody, once all the investigations are done we will update the nation accordingly,” Kalaya said.

Meanwhile, information gathered indicates that the deceased asked for a bottle of water at the bar but did not pay for it.

The owner of the bar called for police support at Gateway Mall Police Unit, where the officer accidentally shot Makawa in the chest.

Meanwhile, the deceased family in Area 49 said they cannot comment on the matter as they are currently mourning.

“We will come back to you once we are done with the burial arrangements, at the moment there are a lot of versions on social media to which we cannot respond,” said a representative of the family.
