Suicide Cases Soars In Mzuzu – Police

Suicide cases are reported to be on the increase in the city of Mzuzu, the city police has complained.

The complaint comes in the wake of a 14 year old girl, Moles Mwandila  who has died after committing suicide at Lubinga Township in  Mzuzu City.

According to Mzuzu City Police Assistant Public Relations officer, Mercy Chitonde the girl went missing on May 16, 2023 and the matter was reported to Police who immediately launched investigations.

Chitonde said “the missing girl was found dead on May 21, 2023 in decomposed state in a chicken kraal suspectedly after she had committed suicide.”

“Postmortem conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital revealed that Moles Mwandila who hailed from Vumo village, Traditional Authority  Nthalire in chitipa district  died due to strangulation,” Chitonde added.

In a related development, another  36 year old man  Wakisa Mwandalo has committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom on May 22, 2023 around 4:00am in Chiputula Township.

During last Sunday’s service of worship in Mzuzu city, the Deputy General Secretary of the Synod of Livingstonia in the CCAP, Isaiah Mhone pleaded eith all those troubled by various socioeconomic challenges not to lose hope including those devastated by the effects of Cyclone Freddy which has left close to 800 people dead.

Meanwhile, Police is advising the general public to share their troubling issues to its Victim Support Unit, churches, traditional leaders, non-governmental organizations for counseling on how best to handle them and indeed getting better redress rather than resorting to committing suicide as a solution to their problems.
