Mulanje Man Arrested for Illegal Mining

Police in Mulanje are keeping in cell a 51- year old, Chisasa Tungamire, on suspicion that he was doing illegal mining in Mulanje Mountain.

Police Spokesperson in the district, Sub-Inspector Gresham Ngwira told the media that Tungamire is alleged to have been found with a bag of minerals believed to be Quartz, suspected to have been extracted from the mountain.

Meanwhile, authorities have disclosed that arrangements are underway to take the suspected minerals to the Geological Surveys Department for examination.

Local and international stakehoders in the mining sector have on many occasions accused government of Malawi for being very slow to exploit mineral deposits found in many parts of the county.
