Muluzi Leaves The Mantle To Lilian
Since 1992 when Malawians overwhelmingy demonstrated an intention to change the way they wanted to be governed the name of Muluzi has always been associated with the United Democratic Front (UDF)
Since then the leadership of the party has been in the hands of the Muluzi family; starting from Bakili then his on Atupele until last Saturday evening when it was communicated that President Atupele Austin Muluzi tendered his resignation from active politics.
In his letter, Atupele states that a member of parliament for Mangochi Soūth Constituency, Lilian Patel has been appointed as Acting President until such a time when the party will hold its national convention.
In his resignation letter, Muluzi briefly said he wants to focus on personal businesses for the development and progress of Malawi.
UDF’s spokesperson, Yusuf Mwawa confirmed the authenticity of the letter but says the National Executive Council (NEC) was not consulted about Muluzi’s decision.
Mwawa further says NEC will soon meet to approve the name of the one taking over as the new party leader.
“It is indeed true that our party president, Atupele Muluzi has resigned from the position of party president, NEC will meet to brainstorm and confirm the nàme of our new leader,” Mwawa said
Ironically, the Secretary-General, Kandi Padambo said the party has already discussed Muluzi’s resignation plan but he could only confirm properly after receiving his formal resignation letter
.
“We received a verbal communication about his intention to resign from active politics, soon NEC will meet to scrutinise and confirm the name for Muluzi’s successor,” Padambo said.
Some reliable sources have informed this publication that Atupele Muluzi is going to serve as a diplomat in one of the European countries.
