Malawians In Diaspora Annoyed With Corruption
A group of Malawian academics and professionals in diaspora has asked the Tonse Alliance administration to suspend all those implicated in corruption and looting, without prejudice to their constitutionally guaranteed right to presumption of innocence, and ensure that criminal allegations are investigated and prosecuted quickly.
In a statement, the academicians and professionals say that the deliberate weakening and isolation of institutions that investigate and prosecute corruption such as the Anti-Corruprion Bureau (ACB), defeats the fight against corruption.
The statement further says that presidential instructions to ACB is interfering with the independence of the bureau.
The grouping has therefore called on government to strengthen all institutions of accountability and ensure that they function independently.
The academicians have also bemoaned what they call the regularity of looting and corruption involving those at the very top of government, business people, civil servants, police, and military officials and lack of political will to fight corruption.
Reads the statement in part :“In response, the government has at best exhibited an indifferent attitude and at worst behaved in a manner that suggests a coverup or an intention to obstruct the course of justice.”
The statement has been signed by over 20 academicians and professionals, including Professor Danwood Chirwa, Professor Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, Dr. John Lwanda, Mpalive Msiska, Tom Likambale and Linda Semu, just to mention a few. – Online Copy
