Moyale Condemn Ekwendeni Hammers in Mzuzu Derby
Efforts to bail out themselves from the jaws of relegation still remains as an uphill task for the northern region outfit, Ekwendeni Hammers who have lost 1-2 to their cross-town rivals Moyale Barracks FC.
Playing before a sizeable crowd at the Mzuzu stadium on Sunday, the military side took control of the proceedings right from the first whistle with a neat passing game.
Despite the first half producing no goals from either side both teams registered a number of brilliant flashes which could have resulted into beautiful goals after waves of attacks.
Ekwendeni Hammers were more of a rejuvenated side in the second half but all their efforts to take the lead were thwarted by an equally charged Moyale Barracks defence commanded by experienced Boy-boy Chima alongside Mtopijo Njewa.
A 25 meter shot taken from close to the eastern touch line by Ntopijo Njewa after he dribbled past two opponents in the 58th minute resulted into the first goal of the day which mesmerized everyone in the stadium.
Efforts for the Hammers to get an equalizer for proved futile until Lloyd Njaliwa stretched the lead in the 75th minute when he rifled into the net for the well organized 3rd Battalion side to lead 2-0 having beaten a collapsed offside trap.
With less than 10 before the final whistle Ekwendeni Hammers scored a consolation goal which came after their striker, Gift Chunga raced past Moyale’s defence with a thunderous shot from close range beating Moyale’s goal custodian, Macdonald onald Harawa.
Following the Mzuzu derby, Moyale Barracks FC are now on 8th position with 26 points from 19 games while Ekwendeni Hammers are still rooted in condemnation on third from bottom of the TNM Super League table with meagre 15 points from 20 games.
