MANEPO Condemns Elderly Women Forced Burial

The Malawi Network of Older Persons (MANEPO) has condemned in strongest terms the ancient and barbaric behaviour demonstrated by some community members who forced two elderly women forced to bury a dead person in the area of Inkosi Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba district.

Condemning the primitive act to Malawi Daily Telegraph, MANEPO’s Country Director Andrew Kavala said it is inhumane to continue thinking backwardly, violating the elderly citizen’s rights.

“As an institution, we strongly condemn what happened, if someone suspects any foul play in their communities, let them seek legal redress than taking the law in their hands because mob justice is illegal,” Kavala said.

MANEPO further appeals to the police for speedy investigation and bring the suspects to court for trial adding that someone has to be accountable.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Mthwalo of Mzimba says he is shocked with the video going viral on the internet showing the two elderly women being forced to bury a dead person in the area of Inkosi Kampingo Sibande in the district.

The senior chief says they will be engaging traditional leaders in the area on the matter as the two were accused of witchcraft and having a hand in the death of the deceased.

Meanwhile, Mzimba police spokesperson Peter Botha has told us police are investigating the issue.
