Mzuzu City Half Marathon Pegged At K30 Million

This year’s 21 Kilometre Mzuzu City Half Marathon will be held on 5th March with the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNSC) pegging the event at a K30 million budget.

The event which is organized annually in order to raise awareness on good health, well-being, develop and improve performances for the athletes comes in preparation for the Blantyre 42.195 Kilometre race.

Launching the Mzuzu Marathon on Friday, MNCS Board Member, Hellen Mpinganjira Tasosa expressed a huge need for mass participation in the sport by both local and international athletes and called on the corporate society to render support towards the successful hosting of the event.

“Just like the way always sports have been bringing people together, let me appeal to all the stakeholders in sports development to join hand and ensure a very successful hosting of the Mzuzu City Half Marathon,” Mpinganjira said.

The MNCS Acting Executive Secretary, Sherperd Boma added to this by stressing on the public sector involvement in all the country’s three marathons while creating business platforms for their investments.

In his remarks, Lieutenant Godfrey Guwa of Moyale Barracks said the Malawi Defense Force will bring both, soldiers and military civilians sponsored athletes to ensure maximum competitiveness of the Mzuzu City Half Marathon.

However, the organizing chairperson for the marathon, Peter Mumba said Mzuzu City has always been ready to host high profile events of the Mzuzu City Half Marathon’s caliber while calling on all city residents to come out in their large numbers to support the event.

“Let’s give the Marathon all the support it requires and show that we are equally ready to host whatever high profile event that may come,” Mumba said.

Through such Marathons Malawi has produced reputable athletes like Asimenye Simwaka who has represented the country at almost all the international athletics competitions.
