Government Supports Human Rights Body

Government has reaffirmed it’s continued commitment to ensure that no cases of human right violations continues to be registered in the country.

It is against this background that the Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda says government will support the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in getting its Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) re-accreditation in October, this year.

The Alliance which is well known as the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights is a representative body of national human rights institutions from all parts of the globe.

Speaking to Malawi Daily Telegraph on Sunday, Nyirenda says if the re-accreditation is successful, the commission will retain its ‘A’ Status at international level.

“The successful accreditation of the Commission right away triggers the automatic ‘A’ status which is good for the country in it’s efforts to reduce cases to with human rights violations,” Nyirenda said.

He further stated that government will also fully support the commission to ensure that it submits its bi-annual reports to African Commission on Human Peoples Rights (ACHPR).
