Mwanyali, Chirwa Are Inaugural Mzuzu City Half Marathon Champs

20 year old Chikondi Mwanyali and Nalissie Chirwa are champions in the inaugural Mzuzu Half Marathon held in Mzuzu city on Sunday morning.

Mwanyali completed his race in 1 hour 8 minutes while the female champion, Nalissie Chirwa wounded her race in 1 hour 24 minutes.

This development means that athletes in the country are still struggling to break the 1 hour 4 minutes record set by the organizing committee at the Malawi National Sports Council.

In his remarks Chairperson of the MNSC Board, Sunduzwayo Madise hailed the people of Mzuzu for providing the much needed support to athletes during the marathon.

However, Madise has decried the status of Mzuzu Stadium which is in a dilapidated state as embarrassing considering that it is the only stadium in the north in such a sorry state.

He has since advised the responsible authorities (Mzuzu City Council) to consult the Malawi National Sports Council if they are having challenges to rehabilitate the same.

“Consult the Council if there are financial challenges, this stadium facility is in an embarrassing state,” Madise said.

Meanwhile Sports Minister, Uchizi Mkandawire has pledged government continued support towards sports development describing it as sports one of the crucial pillars in the implementation Malawi-2063 development agenda.
