Raiply In Special Touch Of Tropical Cyclone Freddy Victims
By Draxon Maloya
A friend in deed is a friend in need and charity begins at home, one of the country’s leading timber producers, Raiply Malawi Limited has responded to the calls made by the government to contribute towards reducing suffering of those affected by the Tropical Cyclone Freddy (TCF) in the southern region.
Raiply Malawi Limited has responded with relief assistance to TCF victims having first appreciated the needs of those closest to the company’s operation areas around Chigumula, Zomba and Nanchidwa in Mulanje before extending elsewhere as assessment to establish the impact of damage still continues.
Speaking briefly, after visiting some of the victims Raiply’s Public Relations Officer, Dalitso Chimwala said the wood processing company is providing maize flour, cooking oil, briquettes, beans, kapena and soya pieces to communities affected by Cyclone Freddy.
“We have started with those closest to us, the idea is that we have a connection with those communities, either we draw labour force or we pass through their villages areas. We want to show our love to them in this time of need, after they got affected by thecyclone.” Chimwala said.
He further stated that “we live for each other, what affects one today may affect the other tomorrow, it’s like providing a shoulder for those communities to lean on at this point when they are at their most weakest point”.
He then said as tree planters, Raiply knows that tree cover provides one of the most effective ways of checking some of the effects of climate change hence there will be a connection between care of the environment and lives.
Meanwhile, the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) has approved US$300,000 towards humanitarian assistance to Malawi following Cyclone Freddy and declaration of the State of Disaster by the President DR LAZARUS CHAKWERA on 15 March 2023.
