North-Police Challenges Media To Hold Police Accountable

The challenge comes in the wake of the security agency’s new vision for improved quality services to the citizenry which has of late witnessed officers from the Malawi Police Service and community police in joint night patrols in various locations in Mzuzu city.

Commissioner of Police in the Northern Region, Mlowoka Noel Kayira has challenged the media to hold the police accountable in order for it to provide quality security services in accordance to Section 12 of the Police Act.

Speaking during the interface with journalists under Nyika Media Club at the Northern Region Police Headquarters in Mzuzu on Thursday, the Regional Police chief stressed on the duties and obligations journalists have in spreading accurate information.

“We have a vision in fulfillment of our objective in the provision of improved quality security services in accordance to Section 12 of the Police Act, for this to be achieved we need a responsible media to help us achieve that,” Kayira said.

During the meeting the commissioner also asked the media to assist the police in combating thefts of farm produce and livestock which he said are on the increase in the region.

In his remarks, Nyika Media Club Chairperson, Joseph Mwale pleaded with the police to continue cultivating good partnership in information sharing despite instituting its own radio station.

“The coming in of the Police FM should not affect the police efficiency in information sharing more particularly the Public Relations Department,” Mwale emphasized.
