It sounds more of a wise decision from the Football Association of Malawi to consider a new result-oriented two-year contract with Afcon qualification as a priority for Coach Patrick Mabedi.

Mabedi’s new contract ensures that the team’s primary focus will be on qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which is a prestigious tournament for African national teams.

Several soccer pundits have commented saying signing a result-oriented contract, the team management is emphasizing the importance of achieving positive outcomes and pushing for success in the qualifying campaign.

One of the ardent soccer pundits Kondanani Njakwa said this approach will likely encourage Coach Mabedi, his backroom staff and the players to work hard and strive for the best possible results in their matches.

“Having a specific target like Afcon qualification can also help to build a sense of motivation and unity among the team. It creates a common goal that everyone can work towards and provides a clear framework for measuring success,” Njakwa said.

However, another football commentator Allan Chirwa pointed out that it is important to remember that football is a complex and unpredictable sport having many factors that can influence the outcome of matches.

Chirwa emphasized that while the focus on results is crucial, it’s also important to consider other aspects, such as player development, team cohesion, and long-term planning.

“Ultimately, a result-oriented contract with Afcon qualification as a priority can provide a solid foundation for the Malawi national football team’s ambitions, It will be up to Coach Mabedi and the players to work hard, perform well, and navigate the challenges they may face on their journey towards qualifying for the prestigious tournaments,” Chirwa said.

Among specific targets that the Football Association of Malawi (FAM)’s Technical Committee has put on Malawi Senior Men’s National team coach, Patrick Mabedi include the team’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

At least finishing in the top two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and reaching the Semifinal placement in the COSAFA tournament which is viewed as a developmental opportunity for the senior national team.

Meanwhile, Mabedi’s appointment is contingent upon reaching an agreement on the specified targets and personal terms.
