Analyst Predict MCP-DPP Horse Race In 2025-Presidential Contest
As the country is preparing to go to the polls on the 16th of September 2025, aspiring Candidates are busy perfecting their operations and mapping strategic plans.
This week, two political parties were registered with one of the Country’s Self-proclaimed Prophets, David Mbewe who is the founder and overseer of the Living Word Evangelistic Church officially registering his Liberation For Economic Freedom (LEF) ahead of the tripartite elections.
Ironically, LEF’s formation is against an official refute of media reports that Prophet Mbewe who is based in Machinga is politically involved and was forming a Political organization.
However, a Political analyst Ernest Thindwa has projected that the winner of the next presidential elections will come from either the Malawi Congress Party or the Democratic Progressive Party.
Thindwa was reacting to the events on the political scene that in just five days, two new presidential hopefuls, Eddie Longwe and Prophet David Mbewe, have come out to declare their candidature, a development he described as signifying the beauty of freedom of association prevailing in Malawi.
“Registration of political organisations is a manifestation of the freedom of association prevailing in the country, but I foresee MCP and DPP will seriously face-off against each other in next year’s presidential election, “
On the other hand, Victor Chipofya Jr., another political commentator, says: “only a 50%+1 electoral system will differentiate the forthcoming elections from the previous ones, in that only the first and second candidates will face each other in the event of a rerun”.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Electoral Commission is facing challenges from some political parties and Civil Society Organisations calling on the electoral body to disregard the results of new constituency demarcation exercise calling them illogical and costly to implement.
