Parliamentarian Kathumba Clears Vulnerable Students To Write Exams
Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Mapuyu South Constituency, Ester Kathumba has bailed out 53 secondary school students who failed to pay this year’s examination fees.
Kathumba’s gesture comes following the Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) announcing that over 29 000 students in the country were on the verge of missing out on the final list of candidates sitting for this year’s exams having failed to pay the examination fees.
The Parliamentarian has paid K650,490.00 for students at Mzobwe CDSS, K452,570.00 for those learning at Ming’ongo CDSS while K90,650.00 has been paid for students at Kamanzi CDSS, totalling to the sum of K1,193,710.00.
In a telephone interview with this publication, Honourable Kathumba said her gesture is in compliment of her zero-tolerance to ignorance in her constituency hence ensuring that every child goes to school.
“I can’t accept any child in my constituency to fail writing examinations because of financial difficulties as long as I am alive,” challenged Kathumba.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator of Children Programmes at St. Egidio, Crief Daniel has commended all those who have assisted needy students who could not sit for this year’s examinations due to their failure to pay examination fees.
“We would like to commend all those who have assisted children to write examinations, that will assist in reducing psychological trauma among the vulnerable students,” said Daniel
Apart from championing quality education in all the schools in Lilongwe Mapuyu South Constituency, Kathumba has also been instrumental in initiating various infrastructural development projects in her area which include the construction of a magnificent Tapempha Medical Care facility to ease challenges hindering the safe Motherhood Initiative.
