President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has directed that families of people who lost their lives in the struggle for the country’s independence at the hands of British colonialists be compensated.

Making the remarks in Nkhata-Bay, during Martyrs’ Day commemorations in honor of the fallen heroes the president has responded to the calls from families who have been pushing for a long time to get compensated for the loss of their loved ones and property.

“This is the only way we as a country can honour the families for the loss of their loved ones, I therefore direct the ministry of Justice to work in collaboration with my office to ensure that these families are properly compensated,” said Chakwera.

Chakwera then emphasized stating that Martyrs’ Day should be a day of celebrating the lives of the fallen heroes and not a day of mourning adding that their death brought freedom the country is enjoying urging the countrymen to emulate the example set by the heroes.

“They showed bravery despite having no weapons against the colonialists. They taught us that a good citizen participates in the affairs of their country despite facing challenges,” adds the president.

Speaking earlier, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda, hailed the Martyrs for standing up against oppression in order to emancipate the country.

“The beauty about these people is that they were selfless, they never fought for their own good but rather the whole Malawi,” he said.

Representative of the deceased families James Thawi, praised President Chakwera for showing empathy towards the families and honouring the fallen heroes.

In an interview on the side-lines of the presidential function, Senior Chief Mkumbira thanked the Chakwera for distributing relief Maize flour to his subjects.
