Chaķwera Pardons 45 Prisoners

With powers vested upon him under Section 89(2) of the Republican Constitution, section 111 of the prisons act, His Excellency the State President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has pardoned 49 prisoners as part of this years Easter celebrations.

In a letter signed by the Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland Security, Dr. Steven Kayuni. PhD, states that those released from jail are the ones who have served half of their custodial sentence, chronically ill, elderly and mother’s who were accompanied to prison by their babies.

The statement further states that it has also pleased the head of State to reduce prison sentences for every convict by six (6) months as an act of clemency during this Easter Holiday and a measure of decongesting the country’s prisons.
