Government Issues Sugar Importation licenses
The Ministry of Trade has made a ground-breaking decision by issuing 20 companies with sugar importation licenses in an effort to stabilize the market.
For the a year now, the shelves have been empty, and the demand for sugar is higher than ever.
Making an announcement on Thursday, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Trade Patrick Botha says, the licensed companies were given the green light to import the much-needed commodity from various countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, and Brazil.
“Malawians deserve better, at least a wave of relief needs to be swept through, as the promise of sugar slowly made its way back onto the shelves,” Botha said.
As the news spread, a Civil Society organization chairperson for the Consumers Association of Malawi, John Kapito rejoiced at the prospect of the commodity becoming more accessible and affordable once again.
“At least, there is hope in the air anticipating a decrease in the price of sugar, making it easier for everyone to put it on the table and businesses to thrive,” Kapito said.
The country buzzed with excitement as the licensed companies made preparations to bring in the commodity that has been sorely missed.
The streets filled with optimism as the promise of stability and abundance loomed on the horizon, several interviewees gave all thanks to the bold decision made by the Ministry of Trade.
Several companies, with licenses in their hands and determination in their hearts, immediately set off on their mission to bring back the scarce commodity to the country, one shipment at a time.
“The future looks brighter, awaiting the day when sugar would once again flow freely, bringing joy and prosperity to all,” said Joan Mwiba, a resident of Chimaliro Township in Mzuzu city.
