Kumkuyu Hit Back At Mutharika’s Sentiments On Political Violence
Information minister, Moses Kunkuyu, says former head of state, Professor Peter Mutharika has no moral authority to discuss political violence when he personally advocated for intolerance (‘Nyekhwe’) while in office as Head of State.
Responding to Mutharika’s sentiments on some pockets of political instability in some parts of the country, Kunkuyu, says government respects Mutharika’s opinions as former state president.
In his televised speech on Zodiak TV, Mutharika says Malawi is in a leadership crisis such that while there is President Lazarus Chakwera in office, the country has lost direction.
Kunkuyu, however, says the Malawi constitution grants freedom of expression and as such, Mutharika has the right to make public his views.
The Information Minister then stressed, nonetheless, that Chakwera does not condone violence as opposed to Mutharika who once publicly advocated for ‘Nyekhwe’, apparent signalling of DPP party zealots to physically deal with political opposition.
On another note, Kunkuyu has welcomed Mutharika’s declaration to contest for presidency in 2025 hoping “he has the stamina to face Malawian voters again” after he got ousted largely for bad governance saying “Malawians may not be ready for another round of an absent president”.
Commenting on Kumkuyu and Mutharika’s outbursts, Senior governance advocate, Undule Mwakasungula advised the former president to consider his urger when contemplating to contest in next years presidential election.
“It is indeed Paramount for the 84 year old Mutharika to reconsider his age when contemplating to contest in next year’s presidential election, it needs one to be both mentally and physically strong in performing the duties of the president,” said Mwakasungula.
Meanwhile, Mutharika has put the record straight that he is ready to govern the country starting from next year’s 16th September presidential election.
