Government of Malawi has doubled efforts aimed to end human trafficking while dealing away with the concerning issues of illegal immigrants.
The sentiments comes following the deportation of an Ethiopian Ahmed Muhammad Kondo and his wife for being involved in the syndicate at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa district.
The Homeland Security Minister, Kenneth Zikhale revealed that Muhammad Kondo built a structure where he was forcefully keeping abducted immigrants from countries like Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Burundi.
The Minister also disclosed that Muhammad Kondo and his wife were once deported in 2022 for being involved in similar human trafficking business only to be found back into Malawi through uncharted routes.
Zikhale further reiterated that Dzaleka camp is harbouring security drowning criminals who are putting the country’s stability at risk, hence cautioning those involved in human trafficking syndicates that they will meet the long arm of the law.
“It is worrisome and dangerous because our country is taken as a trade route for illegal immigrants and human trafficking, crooks demanding ransom in the process, government is working tirelessly to fight the malpractice,” Ng’oma said.
The Homeland Security Minister added that the government under the leadership of President Lazarus Chakwera has taken broad steps in making sure it ends the trafficking business in the country and that Dzaleka Refugee Camp is facing multiple challenges among which some prompted government to consider relocating the Camp to Chitipa district.
Located in Dowa district, Dzaleka Refugee Camp which is only 42 kilometres away from the Capital, Lilongwe is currently harbouring over 52,000 refugees against its initial design to keep not more than 12,000 refugees.
