Health Workers Threatens To Abscond Work
Government have until Wednesday this week to respond to the grievances raised by both public and private health workers across the country who have threatened to go on strike if they won’t be given a feedback on issues pertaining to salary adjustments.
The health workers, who include those working in Christian Health Association of Malawi facilities, have since written hospital directors and directors of health and social services about their decision in a letter dated May 10 2024.
“Our salaries do not meet our demands on a daily basis. To add salt on the already painful fresh wound, the impact of the devaluation has greatly and negatively affected us.
“We can no longer survive for the whole month with the salaries that we get from government. We fail to pay our rentals on time. We fail to buy basic commodities and pay school fees for our children and siblings.” Reads part of the letter.
The health workers claim that negotiations with government in previous months have proved futile; hence left with no option but to proceed with their nationwide strike this coming Wednesday.
“We shall never entertain further meetings with officials from any ministry or political grouping on the same,” further reads the letter.
Health workers have at some point conducted demonstrations aimed at calling on government to listen to their claims but up to this date authorities have not yet provided any tangible response.
