Nigerian Ademola Lookman’s Hatrick Ends Levekusen 52 Match Unbeaten Run
Italian side Atalanta caused a massive upset tonite when they bombed into submission highly fancied German newly crowned Champions Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win the EUROPA League trophy.
Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman struck thrice to secure a historic victory for the Bergamo based team that has never won a European Cup.
Domestically, they are reported to have last won a league trophy in 1963, but come Wednesday night, coach Gian Piero Gasperini ended a 60+1year wait for glory with an impressive run over the German side, Bayer Levekusen who looked indomitable both in native league or elsewhere in Europe.
On the field of play itself the memorable evening belonged to the Nigerian, Lookman who was in a world of his own, got his first goal with a non-stop connection on a loose ball from the blind side after Leverkusen failed to clear their lines.
He fired home again following a serious run past a couple of defenders before volleying the ball away from the keeper, orchestrated his attacking instincts like in the first goal, operating from the left hand edge of the opponent’s 20 meter box.
Lookman, has now earned himself the status of a Darling in Atalanta, completed his demolition assignment when he received the ball outside the left edge of the goal box, took out a defender with a body swerve then unleashed a left foot volley past the Leverkusen keeper to take the game far beyond the reach of a gallant German collection that never stopped fighting despite falling behind 2-0 by half time.
Atalanta outplayed, out fought and out gunned Leverkusen, closing all spaces in the box such that much as Leverkusen attacked, they just couldn’t penetrate the tight defence, surely the Germans were well thrashed on the night.
Prior to this, Atalanta smashed both Liverpool and Marseille, Wednesday night they showed why they easily overrun their previous formidable opponents.
