The History Behind Delamare House
Blantyre city, known for its rich history and colonial charm, is counted among the strongest centers of commerce and industry in the southern part of Africa.
Its skyline is dotted with towering skyscrapers and modern buildings, but it was not always this way. In the early days of the city’s development, one man had a vision to transform Blantyre and put it on the map as a center of progress and innovation.
That man is no any other than the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the former leader of Malawi who ruled the country for over three decades. Known for his strong leadership and determination, Banda was a visionary who saw the potential in Blantyre and sought to usher in a new era of development and growth.
On 14th May 1970, in the heart of the city, Banda officially commissioned the Delamare House, a towering structure that then became one of the first tallest buildings in Blantyre. Named after ‘Sir Henry Delamare’, a prominent figure in Malawi’s history, the building was a symbol of progress and modernity in a city that was quickly evolving.
When the Delamare House was completed, it stood as a testament to Banda’s vision for the future of Blantyre. The sleek, modern design and towering height of the building quickly became an iconic symbol of the city’s growth and prosperity.
As Blantyre continues to expand and develop, the Delamare House remained a prominent fixture in the city skyline, attracting visitors and residents alike with its striking presence and commanding views of the surrounding area.
Today, the Delamare House stands as a lasting legacy to the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda and his vision for Blantyre. It serves as a reminder of the city’s rich history and the enduring spirit of progress and innovation that continues to drive its growth and development.
