MCP Dragged to Court Ahead of Convention
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has been taken to court over criteria used in allowing candidates to take part in the elective conference scheduled for the 8th-10th August in the capital, Lilongwe.
Two months ago the National Executive Committee (NEC) which was presided over by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in Lilongwe made resolutions that only members who have been with the party fot more than two years are the ones eligible to contest for any post at the convention.
This did not go down well with some new members and some top officials in the party who penned the Secretary General demanding a reversal of the decision.
Over the weekend, the Presiding chair of the convention Kezzie Msukwa made it crystal clear that the adopted new criteria will be used at the forthcoming convention.
This has propelled a group of some MCP members led by Eddie Banda to drag the party to court.
Effort to talk to MCP spokesperson on the matter proved futile but the party’s
legal counsel is reported to have recused himself from the case.
