MCP Lifts Restriction on New Members Contesting Positions

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has overturned the National Executive Committee (NEC)’s previous resolution that prevented members with less than two years of party membership from running for leadership positions.

The decision was announced by Zebron Chilondola, the MCP regional chairman for the central region, during a party event held on Wednesday.

The catalyst for this change was the recent defection of Vera Kamtukule, the Minister of Tourism, from the United Transformation Movement (UTM) to the MCP.

Kamtukule’s decision to join the MCP underscores the party’s open-door policy, which allows anyone to become a member and participate in internal processes.

Speaking at the event, Chilondola emphasized that the MCP values democratic freedom and inclusivity.

“By removing the restriction, the party aims to encourage active participation and ensure a level playing field for all members seeking leadership roles,” said Chilondola.

Kamtukule, in her statement, expressed her commitment to facilitating smooth development implementation in her constituency through her affiliation with the MCP.

This development comes as a relief to many party members whose tenure has not yet surpassed two years. Notable figures like Uladi Mussa, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, Mganda Chiume, Joe Thomas Nyirongo, and Ken Msonda can now actively vie for positions within the party.

The MCP’s decision signals a renewed focus on democratic principles and a commitment to fostering an inclusive political environment in Malawi.
