Rukia Bulle Wins 2024 BBC News Komla Dumor Award

Kenyan journalist Rukia Bulle has emerged as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 BBC News Komla Dumor Award. The accolade recognizes her outstanding contributions to journalism and her commitment to human interest stories.

Rukia Bulle, currently affiliated with the Nation Media Group, has made significant strides in her reporting career. Her coverage spans a diverse range of national events and news features across Kenya. Notably, she specializes in human interest stories, bringing attention to the lives and experiences of ordinary people.

Beyond traditional media, Rukia has also cultivated a substantial following on TikTok. Through relatable and informative content, she offers glimpses into the daily life of a journalist, demystifying the profession for her audience.

As part of her award, Rukia will spend three months collaborating with BBC News teams in London. This opportunity will provide her with invaluable experience, mentorship, and exposure across television, radio, and online platforms.

The Komla Dumor Award has a distinguished history, with previous winners achieving remarkable success. Among its alumni are Waihiga Mwaura, now the Lead Presenter for BBC News’ flagship show, “Focus on Africa”; Nancy Kacungira, a respected BBC News presenter; Victoria Rubadiri, host of CNN International’s series “Connecting Africa”; and Solomon Serwanjja, Executive Director of the African Institute for Investigative Journalism.

The most recent recipient, Paa Kwesi Asare from Ghana, serves as a journalist and anchor at Ghanaian broadcaster TV3. Rukia Bulle’s achievement adds to this legacy, underscoring the importance of journalistic excellence and storytelling in Africa.
