SADC Summit 2024: Promoting Innovation for Economic Growth and Industrialization
Harare, Zimbabwe: The 44th Ordinary Summit of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) kicked off in Harare, Zimbabwe, with a focus on promoting innovation to unlock opportunities for sustained economic growth and development towards industrialization.
Elias Magosi, SADC’s Executive Secretary-General, emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, stating it will guide regional members towards a transformative journey and prosperity.
Magosi expressed concern over low inter-regional trade levels, currently at 23%, highlighting the need for increased trade among member states.
The hosting president Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, incoming SADC Chairperson, welcomed delegates and acknowledged the region’s progress since SADC’s establishment.
He emphasized the need for collective efforts towards a prosperous future.
High on the program, the summit also saw the handover of chairmanship from Angola’s President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco to President Mnangagwa.
Additionally, Namibia’s new President, Nangolo Mbumba, extended condolences to Malawi for the passing of Vice President Dr. Saulos Claus Chilima.
Key attendees include President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi and other regional leaders. The summit aims to shape the future of the region, expedite progress on industrialization, and strengthen regional cooperation.
