HRADC Takes Center Stage: Champions Human Rights and Democracy in Malawi

In an effort to sustain the civil space, Malawians have witnessed the formation of the Campaign for Human Rights Accountability and Democracy (HRADC), a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to promoting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law across various spheres of socioeconomic development.

HRADC’s mission is to support civil society organizations and individuals who are working to defend these core values.

The organization primarily focuses on lobbying for the right to life, liberty, and security of person, freedom from torture and ill-treatment, freedom of expression and association, and the right to fair trials.

With proper structures across the country this campaign utilizes all possible instruments to support efforts in promoting democratic governance, political participation, and the advancement of human rights in politics.

In an interview in Mzuzu a fortnight ago, HRADC National Chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba highlighted the organization’s critical roles in promoting the rule of law.

“These include supporting efforts to strengthen judicial systems, combat corruption, and protect against human rights abuses by government officials,” said Mkwezalamba.

Adding substance to what Mkwezalamba highlighted, HRADC chairperson for the north, Kinnear Mlowoka said the campaign undertakes a range of activities to achieve its goals, including capacity building, providing training and programs for civil society organizations and individuals who are working to promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

“HRADC advocates for policy changes and legislative reforms that promote human rights, democracy, and the rule, conducts research and documentation on human rights abuses and other issues related to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law,” said Mlowoka.

In order to maximize networking, the HRADC has since it’s inception built partnerships with other NGOs, international organizations, and governments advancing its goals.
