Past Achievements Do Not Guarantee Future Success – Dr. Matthews Mtumbuka

Dr. Matthews Mtumbuka, Founder and Executive Director of Weagle Holdings Limited and aspiring UTM party president, inspired graduates from Mzuzu University to not rest on their laurels.

In his heartfelt speech, “Shape Your Destiny,” delivered on Friday night, Mtumbuka reflected on his own graduation from the Malawi Polytechnic, now known as MUBAS, two decades ago. He shared the emotional experience of parting ways with classmates, some of whom he has rarely or never met since.

The philanthropist candidly spoke about the fear he felt upon leaving university, despite his academic and leadership successes. He emphasized that “past achievements do not guarantee future success,” urging the graduates to adopt a similar mindset.

He challenged those who excelled to continue striving for success and those who hadn’t to view this transition as a fresh start. He highlighted the significance of youths in Malawi, who constitute over 60% of the population.

“I have always advocated for genuine youth empowerment, proposing special parliamentary seats for youth, women, the elderly, and those living with disabilities. We must have a major overhaul in the representation of special interest groups in national governance,” said Mtumbuka.

“Let me also share my ten key principles for achieving success, starting with ambition and having a clear life plan driven to reach the skies,” he added.
Jayson Majomeka Paul, graduating from the Faculty of Education majoring in Arts, commended Mtumbuka, saying his presentation resonated deeply with the outgoing students, leaving them motivated to embark on their new journeys with a sense of purpose and determination.

“The journey has been so challenging; school isn’t easy, but with what Dr. Mtumbuka has reminded us, we feel greatly motivated to embark on our new journeys with that much-required sense of purpose,” said Majomeka Paul.
