President Chakwera Addresses 79th Session Of UNGA: Calls For Collective Action & Reforms

President Lazarus Chakwera, has emphasized the need for collective action and cooperation to address global challenges.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Chakwera demonstrated Malawi’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

He highlighted the importance of democratizing the multilateral agency to ensure equal representation and decision-making power for all member states.

On climate, Chakwera stressed the devastating impact of tropical storms against Malawi’s development gains, emphasizing the need for collective action to address the effects of climate change by among others cut carbon emissions by half before 2040.

“Global South needs fair competition for natural resources, international markets, financial support, and application of new technologies to the development matrix,” said Chakwera.

On global cooperation the Malawi leader called for coordinated efforts to address pandemics, pointing out disparities in vaccine distribution and access while strengthening health systems to build resilience against future pandemics.

Leading one of the developing countries he tackled Debt Relief, advocated for debt cancellation to support impoverished nations like Malawi in their economic recovery efforts, developing mega-farms to feed the world and lift millions of farmers out of subsistence living.

About the UN Reforms, Chakwera emphasized the need for a review to ensure the global organization practices democracy, accountability, and transparency, including the implementation of the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus.

As the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly continues, serves as a reminder of the importance of collective action and cooperation in achieving global peace, sustainable development, and human dignity.
