President Chakwera meeting UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner

New York, September 26, MDT: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to support Malawi in developing clean energy solutions, which it believes can be a game-changer for sustainable development.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner made this commitment on Thursday after meeting with President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in New York, United States of America.

“It was an honour for me, on behalf of UNDP, to meet the President of Malawi. I was pleased to hear him (President) commend UNDP for the work we do in support of the Malawi government,” Steiner said.

He highlighted that UNDP is driving digital transformation, empowering women in government, and supporting inclusive elections in Malawi.

Steiner also emphasized the successful registration of over 9.2 million citizens in Malawi.

“The electronic identity card programme is paving the way for financial inclusion and a digital economy that empowers women, youth, and vulnerable groups. Together, we are building a more inclusive and sustainable future,” he said.

Steiner pledged UNDP’s continued support to help Malawi adopt and benefit from various innovative development solutions, such as the Growth Accelerator initiatives.
