47 Year Old Daniel Chapo To Become Mozambican 5th President

Mzuzu, Malawi: This week tomorrow (Wednesday), Mozambicans will go to the polls to complete their democratic cycle, electing new leaders including the President, members of parliament, and ward councilors.

According to reports from the former Portuguese colony, 47-year-old Daniel Chapo of the ruling FRELIMO party is poised to become Mozambique’s fifth president, succeeding President Filipe Nyusi, who has completed his term in office.

Born in Inhaminga, Sofala Province, on January 6, 1977, Chapo is the sixth of eleven children to Francisco Chapo and Helena dos Santos Chiremba. He completed his secondary education in Beira and later pursued a law degree at Eduardo Mondlane University, graduating in 2004.

Chapo supplemented his education with a Registry and Notary course in Maputo. His professional career began as a Registrar and Public Notary in Nacala-Porto from 2005 to 2009.

Subsequently, Chapo served as a professor, district administrator, and governor of Inhambane Province, later becoming it’s first elected governor in 2019.

Married with three minor children, Chapo enjoys basketball and football. His presidential election is scheduled for October 9th, where he will face Venâncio Mondlane, an independent candidate; Ossufo Momade of the main opposition Renamo party; and Lutero Simango, who is leading the campaign for the third-largest party, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), with promises to build more factories and lower the cost of living.
