African Court Upholds Chanthunya’s Life Imprisonment Sentence

In a landmark ruling, the African Court on Human and People’s Rights (AfCHPR) in Arusha, Tanzania, has dismissed Misozi Chanthunya’s appeal to overturn his life imprisonment sentence for the brutal murder of his Zimbabwean girlfriend, Linda Gasa, in 2010.

Chanthunya was initially convicted by the High Court in Malawi in 2020 and subsequently lost his appeal to the Supreme Court in 2021.

Undeterred, he took his case to the AfCHPR, claiming his rights to a fair trial were violated in Malawi and seeking compensation and release from prison.

However, a 10-member judge panel in Arusha has now upheld the Malawian verdict, finding no wrongdoing by the Malawi government.

This decision has been hailed as a victory for Malawi’s justice system according to Frank Namangale, Spokesperson for Malawi Judiciary.

This outcome brings closure to the tragic case of Linda Gasa’s murder and reinforces the integrity of Malawi’s justice system.
