Arson Devastates 100 Hectares of Pine Trees in Rumphi

A suspected arson attack ravaged over 100 hectares of pine trees between 3rd–5th November 2024 in Mzumara, near Mphompha in Rumphi District.

The blaze destroyed millions of trees planted over the past three years, then valued at K40 million but will now require almost double the amount of money to replant the destroyed private forest.

A local investor, Khumbo Chizaso Harawa, lamented the loss, calling it a clear demonstration of the act of jealousy that undermines environmental conservation efforts.

“This senseless act will impact our ground cover initiatives, exacerbating environmental degradation and global warming effects,” Chizaso said.

Chizaso has since requested for the private and public sector interventions in conducting civic education aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of destroying trees.

The Malawi government has identified bushfires and dry spells as major threats to tree survival rates under the national tree planting initiative.

Principal Forestry Officer Tangu Tumeo emphasized collaborative efforts between government officers and communities to prevent uncontrolled bushfires and protect newly planted tree seedlings.

“Harvesting rainwater strategies are crucial to ensure adequate watering for the trees, especially amidst the El Niño weather phenomenon,” Tumeo added.

The Forestry Act (Sections 68 and 65) prohibits forest fires, pests, and diseases, with offenders facing up to 20 years imprisonment without option of a fine.

Daniel Kabichi, head of law enforcement operations at the Department of Forestry, stressed that the new laws aim to combat deforestation and unsustainable charcoal production.

Meanwhile, the suspected arsonist only identified as Kalua is in police custody awaiting trial.
