Malawi’s State Vice President, Michael Usi, has announced that he will not attend the United Transformation Movement (UTM) party convention, slated for November 17, 2024, in Mzuzu.

Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport upon his return from a public service trip to Azerbaijan, Usi made it clear that he refuses to participate in a convention where rules are being manipulated.

“Let those who want to fulfill their selfish needs do so,” Usi stated.

Usi’s decision comes amidst controversy surrounding the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decisions, which he believes are unconstitutional.

This isn’t the first time Usi has expressed concerns; he previously cancelled a UTM NEC meeting over the arrest of Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, who is also vying for the UTM presidency.

Usi’s absence from the convention has sparked speculation about his future with the party. As the current UTM president, his decision to boycott the event raises questions about the party’s leadership and direction.

The convention is expected to elect new leaders, but Usi’s withdrawal may indicate a deeper rift within the party as it remain to be seen how this development will impact the UTM convention and the party’s prospects in the upcoming 2025 polls.
