Mzuzu Boxing Enthusiasts Treated to Action-Packed Matches
Boxing enthusiasts in Mzuzu were on Sunday treated to a thrilling experience courtesy of the New Dawn Boxing Promotion, which brought together top boxers from across the country.
The main event saw Mzuzu-based Limbani Lano and Brighton Mcheni from Blantyre settle for a draw in a closely contested heavyweight match.
However, the surprise package of the day was the electrifying match between Aime Malungira from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tinkhani Kamanga from Blantyre.
Malungira’s lightning-fast movements and techniques left Kamanga reeling, with the local boxer being floored three times in the first round before the referee intervened to save him from further punishment.
Mike Chimaliza, Managing Director of New Dawn Boxing Promotion, appealed to the corporate world to support the sport, emphasizing the need for sponsorship to stage high-quality fights.
“It’s time for our companies to take the lead in bringing back the excitement of boxing to Mzuzu residents,” Chimaliza said.
Lonzo Zimba, President of the National Boxing Control Board, praised New Dawn Boxing Promotion for reviving boxing in the Northern region.
The event marked a significant comeback for boxing in Mzuzu, which had gone dormant for almost five years following the closure of the Obrigado Leisure Centre, the city’s former boxing hub.
