ROSAF Intensifies Road Safety Campaigns on M1 Road Amid Rehabilitation Works

The Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) has escalated its road safety awareness campaigns along the M1 Road, which is currently undergoing major rehabilitation works.

ROSAF attributes the high incidence of fatal accidents on this regional route, connecting East and Southern Africa, to excessive speeding, overloading, and high traffic volume.

During a media tour of the rehabilitated road’s LOT 4, spanning from Kacheche to Chiweta in Rumphi District, ROSAF’s Road Safety Education and Publicity Project Supervisor, Thokazani Chenjezi, acknowledged the surge in accidents caused by overloading and speeding.

Chenjezi emphasized the need for road users to reduce their loading capacity and adopt a positive mind-set to minimize carnage.

ROSAF Executive Director Joel Jere cautioned individuals tampering with road signs to cease their destructive actions, which hinder progress in road infrastructure development.

Gelson Chilemba, a heavy goods driver, corroborated Chenjezi’s sentiments, citing overloading as a primary contributor to accidents.

Leah Gondwe, Deputy Head Teacher at Tukuyu Primary School, praised the establishment of school’s Road Safety Clubs, which have significantly reduced road accidents involving children.

The Government of Malawi is rehabilitating the M1 Road from Lilongwe to Karonga, aiming to expand certain sections to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
