Dorothy Shonga Kingston, popularly known as ‘Cash Madam’ in the showbiz world has been voted in as new Film Association of Malawi.

The socialite Dorothy Shonga Kingston has been voted as the new FAMA president having amassed 66 votes, defeating her competitor, actress Flora Suya, who garnered a meagre 15 votes.

In her acceptance speech, Kingston has promised to build modern offices for the association for easy facilitations and also establishing a proposal writing committee to help in sourcing funds for the association.

“We are going to ensure adequate resources are made available for the smooth operation of FAMA, building our own offices and establish a proposal writing committee,” said Shonga Kingston.

However, some of the country’s local film enthusiasts say the delegates who were tasked with the duty to elect a new FAMA president have missed an opportunity to usher in a president with a known film track record.

Another film enthusiast Kayira Henry also expressed concern over the decision, stating that Malawi’s film industry is in a critical developmental stage, saying there is no room for a “try and error” approach by trusting the leadership to inexperienced individuals at its helm.
