Chakwera Reflects On 2024, A Year Of Resilience and Progress

In his New Year’s address, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera described 2024 as a year marked by significant developments and challenges for Malawians.

Despite facing numerous hardships, including the tragic loss of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others, the country made notable progress in various sectors.

Key Achievements in 2024


Restoration of Donor Confidence: Malawi’s financial management reforms led to the return of budgetary support after a decade-long absence, demonstrating the country’s commitment to economic stability.

Economic Growth: The government mobilized over K300 billion in off-budget support to provide emergency food aid to 5.7 million Malawians affected by drought conditions associated with El Nino.

Infrastructure Development_: A K200 million constituency development fund was allocated, resulting in improvements to local infrastructure, including new district council offices, bridges, stadiums, markets, and police stations.

Support for Vulnerable Populations: Various initiatives were implemented, such as social cash transfers, fertilizer assistance, collateral-free loans, and maize distribution, to support vulnerable populations.

Peaceful Voter Registration: A peaceful and inclusive voter registration process saw seven million Malawians register to vote, demonstrating the country’s commitment to democracy.

Looking ahead to 2025

The Malawi leader expressed his commitment to furthering the nation’s progress in 2025, building on the achievements of 2024. With a focus on economic stability, infrastructure development, and support for vulnerable populations, Malawi is poised for continued growth and prosperity.
