DPP Mismanaged Malawi’s Economy – IMF
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has laid blame on the former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government for mismanaging Malawi’s economy during their tenure.
According to IMF’s First Managing Director, Gita Gopinath, the current government has taken bold steps to rescue the economy from collapse.
Gopinath commended President Chakwera’s administration for implementing economic reforms aimed at restoring the IMF-supported Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program.
“I had an excellent meeting with president Lazarus Chakwera , and I congratulated him on the tough decisions made to strengthen the economy. We’re starting to see progress,” she said.
The IMF’s endorsement comes as the current government works to overcome the economic challenges inherited from the previous administration.
Former Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha and former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dalitso Kabambe are currently facing criminal charges for allegedly manipulating foreign exchange figures, effectively deceiving the IMF and the public.
