A dramatic and chaotic scene unfolded in Mashava, a suburb of Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, as approximately 6,000 prisoners staged a massive escape from a local prison.

This incident is believed to be a consequence of the widespread unrest following the disputed general election results.

The opposition FRELIMO party has been contesting the outcome, leading to violent protests and demonstrations.

In the midst of this turmoil, a group of angry protesters stormed the prison, overpowering security personnel and freeing all the convicts, including hardened criminals.

Eyewitnesses describe the scene as “absolute pandemonium” as the prisoners, seizing the opportunity, made a run for freedom.

Meanwhile , the authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to recapture the escaped prisoners.
