Africa Called to Safeguard Mineral Resources
South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, has urged African countries to collaborate closely to protect the continent’s mineral resources for the benefit of Africa.
As Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Mantashe has overseen the development of South Africa’s mineral resources and energy sectors
Mantashe made this call while officially opening the four-day Mining Indaba 2025 in Cape Town.
He emphasized that African countries should focus on processing raw minerals through mineral beneficiation, rather than relying on external aid.
“We must downplayed concerns about the withdrawal of aid by United States President Donald Trump, Africa must take charge of its own mineral resources,” said Mantashe.
The Mining Indaba 2025, held under the theme “Future-Proofing African Mining, Today!” has brought together ministers, officials, and experts from across Africa, including Malawi’s Minister of Mining, Dr. Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma.
Mantashe’s call for collaboration and self-sufficiency echoes his previous statements on the importance of mineral resources for Africa’s economic development.
