Chakwera Sacks Trade Minister

In a surprise move, President Lazarus Chakwera dismissed Sosten Gwengwe as Minister of Trade and Industry during a parliamentary session on Wednesday.
The announcement was made public with the appointment of Vitumbiko Mumba as the new Minister of Trade and Industry.
Interestingly, Gwengwe was seated just two spots away from the President when the dismissal was announced. Chakwera did not provide any reasons for Gwengwe’s dismissal.
The President’s decision comes amidst mounting pressure to address economic hardships and clean up the government.

Chakwera boldly declared that he would not be intimidated by cartels hiking prices, and his actions demonstrate a commitment to taking action against underperforming officials.
A renowned senior political commentator, John Masina, welcomed the move, saying, “Perhaps this is the start of cleansing the government from the rot.”
Masina also noted that Chakwera’s appointment of Mumba shows high confidence in his capabilities.
Mumba previously served as Minister of Labour, where he earned praise for his efforts in ensuring fair working conditions and improved workplace hygiene.
