As Malawi gears up for the 2025 General Elections, the Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has reminded journalists to ensure their own safety and the safety of their media houses while reporting on electoral processes.

MCM’s Executive Director, Moses Kaufa, emphasized the importance of accreditation by employers and the Malawi Electoral Commission to guarantee personal safety.

“We felt it important to bring together reporters from the northern region, UNESCO representatives, and the Malawi Police Service for this training workshop. There is need for a cordial relationship between these officials to foster mutual understanding and cooperation,” said Kaufa.

The workshop covered crucial topics, including: risk assessment, safety equipment, emotional wellbeing, professional code of conduct, electoral complaints reporting and effective documenting and reporting electoral irregularities.

Northern Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector Maurice Chapora, welcomed the initiative, acknowledging the interdependence of the police and media.

“We are always on the ground ensuring freedom of the press in accordance to our legal mandate. These meetings are crucial components to ensure active engagements,” said Chapola.

Africa Brief Bureau Chief, Tionge Hara, who participated in the training, described it as an eye-opener, highlighting the importance of journalists prioritizing their safety.

“The training emphasized the need for journalists to stay informed about the security landscape, establish safety plans, and utilize protective measures when reporting in the field, especially during elections,” said Hara.

The day-long training workshop, “Media Training on the Safety of Journalists During Elections,” was attended by reporters from the northern region, UNESCO representatives, and the Malawi Police Service.
