Government has reconciled with bereaved families in Nkhatabay district who lost loved ones on March 3, 1959, by providing 15 million kwacha to each family.

Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, made this announcement during the Martyrs’ commemoration ceremony held at Nkhatabay District Hospital grounds on Monday.

Banda stated that “families from Nkhatabay have already received their compensation, while those from other regions will begin to receive theirs starting this Wednesday”.

An estimated 61 families are set to receive consolation payments, with 31 of those families located in the Northern Region.

Commenting on the development, United Transformation Movement (UTM) president Dr Dalitso Kabambe has praised the government’s initiative, describing it as long overdue but cautioned against politicizing the reconciliation process.

Kabambe further urged all political parties across the country to collaborate in revitalizing the economy, which is essential for restoring lost growth.

This year’s Martyrs’ Day commemoration took place under the theme “The Martyrs: A Great Model of Patriotism.”
