Mutharika Brought Sour Grapes To Mlakho Wa Alhomwe – Faces Condemnation
Former President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s sentiments that he will guide party followers in choosing his successor prior to next year’s party convention have faced heavy criticisms from many quarters of the society.
The United States trained Law Professor openly castigated some presidential aspirants as illiterate, ‘mbuli’ and very small boys who wanted to remove him from office through the Courts but failed.
Speaking at the Mlakho wa Alhomwe cultural festival on Sunday, the DPP president reiterated that he remains the party’s President up until the convention in July next year.
“Before the convention I will give advise and direction on the qualities of the person who must lead the party.
“Running government is a serious business and requires big boys and those who have gone to school; running government is not for picky-nickies or small boys,” Mutharika said.
He further added that those who are not ready to hold their patience or recognize him as the president can leave and form their own party if at all they will be followed.
Present at the Mlakho Wa Alhomwe cultural festival were almost all DPP presidential aspirants: Bright Msaka, Joseph Mwanamveka, Dalitso Kabambe and the Leader of Opposition In Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa.
Meanwhile in related development, the DPP Deputy Director of Operations, Joe Thomas Nyirongo has made a fresh appeal to the party National Governing Council (NGC) through the Secretary General’s office to publish names of all party committee members in the newspapers to avoid confusing those aspiring for leadership positions.
“Some of the party members meeting our political aspirants in the regions are not genuine delegates to next year’s convention unlike the way we could all love to see them compaigning or selling their manifestos to the right delegates to next year’s convention,” Nyirongo said.
Without dwelling much on Mutharika’s outbursts at Chonde in Mulanje on Sunday, Nyirongo reminded delegates to the convention that the Mlakho wa Alhomwe is a cultural festival and not a party meeting.
“It was a complete offside to politically castigate anyone at that cultural event, organizers of the Mlakho Wa Alhomwe cultural festival banned the wearing of any party colours to the event knowing that it was not a political event whose aim is to unite people while sharing Lhomwe values and tradition,” Nyirongo added.
The DPP NGC member, Ken Msonda laughed louder saying that it is unfortunate and undeniable that some party leaders surrounding Mutharika are not playing according to the rules of the party as per it’s Constitution and are the one who have to leave the party.
“In a democratic and civilized system of governance the party president has no powers or authority to dictate whom delegates should elect during the party elective convention, this only applies in a one party dictatorship system of governance,” Msonda said.
Meanwhile, latest information gathered indicates that the DPP vice president for the Southern Region, Kondwani Nankhumwa will address a political rally slated for Chibavi Ground in the city of Mzuzu on Sunday, 16th October 2022.
