Lilongwe City Council Closes Central Poultry Ltd

Lilongwe city council has ordered the closure of Central Poultry 2000 Limited and Wakawaka market in Lilongwe due to poor sanitation.

The market’s closure is with immediate effect.

Speaking during an inspection tour around the city, Mayor of Lilongwe Richard Banda said poor sanitation is contributing highly to the rise in cases of Cholera in the city.

“We have enforced our city bylaws looking at the company and market failure to follow standard hygiene practices considering the increase in number of cholera cases,” Banda said.

He said the facilities will be reopened once they comply with proper hygiene measures.

Meanwhile, the management of Central Poultry 2000 Limited have declined to comment on the closure of the company.

The cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe have registered 50 percent of more than 18 000 cholera cases recorded across the country.
