MUMCo Reached out to Cyclone Freddy victims

Let’s start giving – MUMco Chair Bruno Kantiki

The Malawi United Kingdom Military Community (MUMCo) has joined the band wagon of local and international organizations responding to President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s call for emergency relief assistance to help people who have been devastated by the Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

Relief assistance follows the Tropical Cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi recently killing hundreds of people including children, displaced and injured thousands and brought severe destruction to the southern region of the country leaving Hundreds still missing as the death toll rises while the officials continue to assess the extent of the damage, there is huge fear that more people could have lost their lives.

The situation has led to Malawi Government declaring the country a state of disaster following this longest-lasting tropical cyclone ever recorded, and one of the deadliest in Africa in recent years.

MUMCo’s gesture

In response, The Malawi UK Military Community (MUMCo), a grouping of Malawians serving in the UK Armed Forces including veterans/former Service personnel initiated a fundraising effort to buy the much-needed immediate relief items such as food, blankets which  has already been sent abd expected to arrive in Malawi by the 3rd April.

According to the MUMCo press release states that “through successful ongoing fundraising appeal, due to the urgent needs, MUMCo has made the first presentation of relief items worth approximately K1.6 million to Cyclone Freddy victims sheltering at Makuwa Primary School, Milepa, Chiradzulu District on Monday, 20 March 2023 led by it’s Chairperson, Bruno Kantiki who is currently in the country and more presentations of similar nature are planned in coming days since the fundraising appeal is an enduring effort”.

MUMCo is an association of Malawians serving in the UK Armed Forces (British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy) and their current fundraiser is an ongoing initiative which aims to address the short and medium needs to vulnerable communities.

Apart from relief assistance MUMCo has in the recent past also handed over a consignment of computers for education use to the First Lady, Monica Chakwera’s Foundation in London, United Kingdom.
