There are poor reporting mechanisms on attacks inflicted to members of the general public by gangs of street kids in the city of Blantyre, the police have complained.

The Southern Region Police Assistant Public Relations officer, Sub-Inspector Beatrice Mikuwa alongside the Community Policing Coordinator, Superintendent Memory Mgeni disclosed this during Timvetse television program on MBC.

The two police officers made mention that members of the general public have developed the tendency of concealing crime by among others alerting those on the wrong side of the law through the social media.

“It is strange that there are numerous reports of crimes committed by gangs of street kids on social media than going to police formations, even those violating road crimes are alerted of police presence in the roads by fellow motorists,” Mgeni said

Posting statuses on Facebook, WhatsApp and tick-tock have also become another way of informing criminals about our movements not knowing that thugs are within waiting for such information,” chipped in Mikuwa.

The Community Policing Coordinator then emphasized the relevance of ‘Know your neighbour campaign’ comprising of ten houses in every location saying this is another way of maximising the protection of life and property, as security starts at community level.

The Assistant police publicist also informed the general public that notorious armed criminals who were apprehended after a shootout with law enforcers at Shoprite in Blantyre City are on remand still being taken to court waiting for judgment.

Recently, the Homeland Security minister, Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma warned that police will use every necessary weapon to overcome criminals in an effort to protect life and property of the citizenry.
